Is Your CCTV Outdated? When Is It Time to Upgrade?
CCTV has come a long way over the years.
If you’ve had a security system installed for a long time, you may still be getting a picture from your cameras and your recorder may still be working perfectly. But that doesn’t necessarily mean your CCTV system is providing the level of protection your business needs today.
Technology has developed enormously, particularly in image quality, recording, remote access and intelligent detection.
At Pentacle Electrical and Security Ltd, we regularly come across older CCTV systems that are still operational but would benefit significantly from an upgrade.
When “Working” Doesn’t Mean “Working Well”
One of the easiest mistakes to make with CCTV is judging a system simply by whether you can see an image on the monitor.
The more important question is:
“If something happened, would the footage actually be useful?”
A camera might produce a perfectly acceptable picture during the day, but what happens when you need to identify someone in poor lighting?
Can you clearly see faces?
Can you read a vehicle registration?
Can you find the relevant footage quickly?
Can you access your system when you’re away from the premises?
These are the things worth considering when assessing an older CCTV installation.
CCTV Has Changed Dramatically
The difference between older and modern CCTV equipment can be remarkable.
Older systems often used analogue cameras, lower-resolution displays and large recording equipment. Some installations even used CRT monitors, like the one shown in our photograph.
Modern digital CCTV systems can offer significantly improved image quality, more efficient recording, easier playback and a much smaller equipment footprint.
Depending on the system and requirements, modern installations can also provide features such as:
• High-resolution images.
• Improved night-time performance.
• Remote viewing from compatible devices.
• Motion detection and event recording.
• More efficient digital storage.
• Notifications when certain events are detected.
• Multiple cameras displayed on a single monitor.
• Easier searching and playback of recorded footage.
Not every business needs every feature, but upgrading gives you the opportunity to assess what your security system needs to achieve.
From CRT to Modern Digital CCTV
The photographs accompanying this article show a real example from the field.
The first image shows the previous CCTV system, complete with an older CRT monitor. The second shows the modern replacement, with a digital recorder and a much clearer display.
The original system wasn’t necessarily useless simply because it was old. It was still doing a job.
But CCTV technology had moved on.
The upgrade provided an opportunity to improve the quality and usability of the system rather than waiting for the old equipment to fail completely.
That’s an important point when considering your own CCTV installation.
You don’t necessarily have to wait for something to break before deciding it’s time for an upgrade.
Signs Your CCTV System May Need Updating
There are several things that could indicate that your CCTV system is becoming outdated.
Poor image quality
If your cameras produce grainy or unclear images, particularly when you need to identify someone or something specific, modern equipment could make a significant difference.
Poor performance at night
Night-time security is extremely important. If your cameras struggle in low-light conditions, it may be worth looking at newer cameras designed to provide better performance in challenging lighting.
Limited recording capacity
Older recording systems may have relatively limited storage. If footage is overwritten too quickly, important recordings could be lost before you realise they’re needed.
No remote access
Many modern CCTV systems can provide remote access, allowing authorised users to view cameras and recordings away from the premises.
For business owners and managers, this can be particularly useful when you’re not physically at the property.
Difficult playback
If finding a particular event involves scrolling through hours of footage, a modern system may make the process considerably easier.
Do You Need to Replace Everything?
Not necessarily.
Every CCTV installation is different, and whether you need a complete replacement or a more targeted upgrade will depend on the existing equipment, cabling, camera locations and what you want the system to achieve.
Sometimes upgrading the recorder and monitor may be appropriate. In other situations, replacing older cameras as well may provide a much greater improvement.
This is where having the existing system assessed by a professional can be useful.
Rather than automatically replacing everything, the aim should be to find a solution that provides the right level of security for the property and your budget.
Think About What You Need Your CCTV to Do
Before upgrading, think about what you actually want from your system.
Do you need to monitor entrances and exits?
Do you need clearer images around a car park?
Do you want to check your premises remotely?
Do you need better coverage after dark?
Do you need footage to be easier to search and retrieve?
Answering these questions helps determine what equipment and camera locations are appropriate.
A good CCTV system isn’t simply about having lots of cameras. It’s about having the right cameras in the right places and being able to use the footage effectively when you need it.

Ask yourself what would happen if you needed to use the footage tomorrow. Could you clearly identify a person? Could you quickly find the relevant recording? Would the image quality be good enough to be useful?
